Spread Upon Me a Canopy of Peace

Spread Upon Me a Canopy of Peace
Photo: Yehuda HaKohen

Life is keeping me in the wild, unsheltered by bricks and
stone, unprotected by sukkah walls, a victim to the elements
and city noise, a victim to the loneliness of discomfort

Spread Your canopy,
peace atop my head,
spread Your green
leaves between skyscrapers,
nail Your branches to steel
gutters, lay quiet fields
between damp sidewalks

I’ve become a savage
in my displacement
I’ll steal fruit without
remorse, I’ll hide
beneath others’ benches
for protection. Give me
peace so I can share
it, give me shelter to be
less cruel

Put me in a sukkah and stop the ground from shaking. Let me
laze around between its walls. Send a breeze to fan me with
the palms above my head, send a gust to carry me home.
